Firstly on the place of today’s church of St Nicholas, around 1273 there was a Gothic basilica. In 1635, it was awarded to the Order of the Benedictines. This order also began with the construction of today’s church of St Nicholas later in 1730. The architect was Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. He built many other Baroque buildings in Bohemia as well. Completion of newly made church was in 1739. During the reign of Joseph II. reperations and delivery of neww bell took place.
K. D. Assam decorated the interior of the church by the time of completion. The altar is the work of Bernard Spinetti and Antonín Braun provided the statue in the front. Also interesting is the chandelier, which was dedicated to the Russian caress Alexander II. in 1880. Its weight is 1400 kg!
The church is open daily. Sometimes there are also concerts that are a great experience thanks to the atmosphere.
